COMMUNITY HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE COME TOGETHER
St Jude’s Church was built on a minor crossroads just outside the city walls of Plymouth in 1875. Now, if you look at a map of Plymouth, one of its suburbs is called – St Jude’s. It was the initial heart of its community then and hopes it can still serve today. You will find a couple of more obvious things we do in this section of the website, such as our Community Hub Cafe, the weekly and other longer Walks and our Next Era Building Project. There is even a tiny project just outside our Upper Hall of a free Book Swap box – bring a book, take a book! There are varied things for young people too – have a look at our Under 18’s section.
St Jude’s church family know we have been given a special place within our community that we don’t take for granted. Hopefully, our Next Era Building Project (more here) is a very visible sign of how much we value, want to maintain and grow our links and be a continuing real help for our community. The congregation at St Jude’s raised, through their own generosity, almost £400,000 to have the church re-ordered, some grants were also obtained, and then at the last minute to bridge a gap, almost £80,000 in December 2023 again from the congregation, so that it can become a seven day a week church and community asset, not just for church on Sundays. This will now become a reality by Summer 2024, having started the work on site in January. Until then, and after, we remain a body of people for whom community is now firmly fixed into our DNA.
