Tuesdays In the Kitchen

As part of our Church Mission and Discipleship framework, “Gardens, Dining Rooms and Kitchens“, we offer courses for individuals to grow. In our framework Gardens are about settings suitable for Guests, Dining Rooms for building Friendships and the Kitchen is the place for the Family. As we resolve dates for each course we’ll show them against each below. They will normally be at 7.30pm in our Upper Hall on the Church site accessible off Beaumont Road.

And so it is in the Kitchen where we grow into the family likeness of Jesus. Here we refer to the Sink where we discover our Ministry and the Oven where things in the Kitchen get finished off and where we discover our place in Mission before passing out the back door into the garden and mixing with guests. Therefore we offer courses to help you in these areas of growing as a disciple of Christ to help fulfil our church aim of being a C4 Church. A church that wants to be about: Christ and our Committment to grow in him and his Commandments and Commission.

One regular courses will be

Welcome to St Judes  – Next on Tuesday 1 May (Changed from 17 April)  and 16 October 2012

An evening with refreshments led by our Vicar, Tim Smith, where he will give you a tour of the church’s ethos and offer an opportunity to ask any questions at all.

Then we have some further more specific courses we would encourage you to attend over a year or two. In general our small groups don’t meet on Tuesdays so you can easily still be a part of a group and just join one of the following for a short season every now and then:

Basic Christianity: Alpha (Next begins on – Tuesday 15 January 2013)

Alpha is a Christian basics course where you can explore the meaning of life over 9 evenings.

Basic Discipleship: 40 Days Of Purpose (Next begins on – Tuesday 6 November 2012)

What are we here for? What is our purpose in life? What would it look like to live a balanced life as a Christian? A great course over 6 evenings that has been transformational for many in their approach to life. Highly recommended.

The Sink: Discovering Your Ministry (Next begins Spring 2013)

What S.H.A.P.E. has God given you? None of us want to be square pegs in round holes. Its the same when it comes to discovering the ministry that best suits you. This isn’t about finding you a job in the church, but to help you consider what role God may have got you readys for as we explore together Sprititual gifts, Heart passions, Abilities, Personalities and Experiences of life. Over 5 evenings you can begin to see a way forward into a fulfilling ministry because you’ll the have the tools to find what will best suit you either in our outside the church.

The Oven: Just Walk Across The Room (Next begins early Summer 2013)

Mission is so much easier when we partner with God. that means making friends and listening for his prompting. This course helps take the pressure off evangelism and maintains mission throughout all our lives and friendships. Only 4 evenings to discover that evangelism isn’t scary and you don’t need to knock on any strangers doors or stand on the street trying to convince people about Jesus with a flip chart. Just make real friends and listen to God’s promps! A liberating few weeks that removes any guilt about fulfilling your part in the great commission to go and make disciples.

Giving at St Jude’s Church

St Jude’s Church is self supporting. Many people think the Church of England must be funded in some way by the state, but this is not the case. Almost half of the funds we raise locally go into a Common Fund run by the Diocese of Exeter who pay for our clergy and their housing. (The following is a short 5 minute video explaining the funding of Exeter Diocese)

Diocese of Exeter from Sam Cavender on Vimeo.

The other half is fully used each year as we pay for a full time Youth & Children’s Minister to oversee the very full young people’s programmes of the church (up to 170 under 18′s use the site each week!), our Administrator and a full time OFSTED approved Pre-School. The direct costs of the Pre-School are met by fees, but the building it occupies and our other hall, Youth & Children’s Minister house and not forgetting the Grade II listed church and grounds all need to be heated and maintained.

And all the funds for this come from the congregation.

But St Jude’s tries hard not to suggest that is only interested in money. For instance, we no longer take a collection at our Sunday morning service as it can make guests and visitors uncomfortable – we’re really pleased they have come to spend some time with us and we certainly don’t want them to have to pay for the opportunity! But to allow this to happen, to enable our share of the common costs of the Diocese to be met, to maintain these buildings and fund all the fantastic ministries we support we do ask those who attend regularly to think about their giving as part of being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Monthly Mission Focus

Each moth of the year here at St Judes we have a different mission focus from one of the linked overseas ministers or linked city ministries we support.

March 2012

YWAM – Colyer Family

For many years St Jude’s has raised disciples who have heard a call from God to move to foreign lands to help spread His Kingdom. The Colyer family now live in Belgium, working for the Christian organisation YWAM.

Youth With A Mission (YWAM) is an international, interdenominational missionary organisation. Internationally there are 17,000 full time staff members working in 1,100 centres in more than 150 countries. YWAM Brussels is a part of the wider YWAM body world wide and a branches of the organisation Jeunnesse en Mission ASBL (the official title in Belgium).

YWAM Belgium has now been established for more than 20 years and is well known in the country for it’s Christian workers and the varied work they have done over the years.

YWAM is an organisation that aims to capture the energy of youth (of all ages!) and mobilise as many as possible into short term mission, long term mission, effective service in churches and effective witness in every sphere of society. Primarily we group our work in three broad categories:

Evangelism

Helping the poor and needy

Training

Linked Overseas Ministries

For many years St Jude’s has raised disciples who have heard a call from God to move to foreign lands to help spread His Kingdom. The ministries and missions we support are because of personal links.

We have families from church working with these organisations:

MAF in South Africa

YWAM in Belgium

We also keep close links with the following where members had been serving more than 20 years and have now come home:

CMS Gahini Hospital Rwanda

OMF in Japan with particular links with Nanae Church on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido

We also have local mission links here.

Last year we as a Church generously donated money to the OMF Earthquake Relief Fund. Some of the money was used by the OMF Iwate Relief Project;  click on the following  link to view  short video  to see how the money has been used  http://vimeo.com/35412981.

C4 – Our Strategy

Watch a short video for an intro to our ideas on Mission and Discipleship where settings are important – The Garden, Dining Room and Kitchen with its Sink and Oven.

An Intentional Outreach & Discipleship Strategy For St Judes
C4 is not just an explosive, it is also the shorthand for our aim as a church that if you read on will become unravelled. “Danger-Explosive!” signs warn of the potential to explode – not of an actual explosion. We believe St Jude’s is on the brink of something really exciting.

We might have a Vicar, a Youth Minister, a Curate, five Readers – two Church Wardens and a Parish Council – several missionaries overseas from our own congregation, last year trained and sent out to another parish a new priest but we have also enabled one young adult to be a Christian Youth Worker in Canada and a second to attend Bible College, but that is not all – because we aim to be a fellowship of ministers.

Our vision is to enable everyone to discover Christ and all that it means to grow in him as we commit ourselves to him and his Church. In growing we can all discover the gifts he gives us and use them within ministries that will suit our own God given characters to finally explore our mission in life – joining in with God’s mission to his world. Our aim is to be a church that is about “CHRIST and our COMMITMENT to grow in him and his COMMANDMENTS and COMMISSION”. C4 Church.

Our Mission Action Plan
Exeter Diocese is wanting to encourage individual and groups of churches to form Mission Communities – fellowships large enough to be self sustaining, discipling and outreaching – under its strategy called Moving On In Mission And Ministry. St Jude’s has now submitted its Mission Action Plan to be considered as a Mission Community in its own right.

Book front cover from www.hdbooks.org.ukIt is built around the strategy of Gardens, Dining Rooms and Kitchens initiated by our Vicar, Tim Smith, that ties together Outreach AND Discipleship in a way we believe is crucial for growth individually and communally. (If you are interested in the book click on the image of the book cover)

It also means reviewing how we do church in our Small Groups – that has begun through our RNLI Small Group Church process – with lots of exploration to come! We are also looking at all of our church buildings in our Next Era project to adapt a Victorian set of buildings into a unified site which can work for us in varied and flexible ways. St Jude’s is on the edge of something new and exciting – following Jesus has never been dull!

(Special thanks to Architects Design Group in Plymouth for generously producing the walkthrough video for us and in giving permission for it to be freely used publically.)
